Crankshaft Grinding Services

Precision crankshaft regrinding for domestic, import, performance, diesel and small engines. Upfront pricing starting at $130, typical 1 to 3 day turnaround, and a shop that has focused on crankshafts for more than 60 years.

What Is Crankshaft Grinding?

Bring Worn Journals Back to Spec

Crankshaft grinding, also called crankshaft regrinding, removes a small, precise amount of material from worn rod and main journals so they are round, straight and smooth again. The journals are ground to a standard undersize, such as .010, .020 or .030 inch, and matching undersize bearings are installed during assembly.

A properly ground crankshaft restores correct bearing clearance and oil pressure, eliminates out of round and taper, and gives your rebuilt engine a reliable foundation. It costs far less than a new crank and keeps your original part in the engine.

Signs Your Crankshaft Needs Grinding

  • Scored, grooved or discolored journals
  • Spun or worn bearings and low oil pressure
  • Journals that measure out of round or tapered
  • Knocking from the bottom end
  • Any full engine rebuild where the crank shows wear

Rods or mains only (seal only) is 75% of the grind price for that crankshaft. Magnaflux and welding are extra. See every engine on our price list.

Exchange Crankshafts

Need it fast? Exchange crankshafts are available at no extra charge when you turn in a core that can be reground without welding. Cores with cracks, stripped threads, broken bolts, sheared keyways or that need excessive welding are not accepted. Replacement cores are available, call for pricing.

Our Process

How We Grind Your Crankshaft

Here is what a typical crankshaft grinding job looks like, whether it is a lawn mower crank or a big block stroker.

Inspect & Measure

We measure the rod and main journals for size, taper and out of round to determine the right undersize.

Crack Test

Magnaflux crack testing is recommended before machining, especially after a spun bearing or engine failure.

Weld if Needed

Journals, thrust surfaces, snouts, keyways and seal surfaces worn beyond a regrind can be welded and machined back to size.

Grind to Size

Rod and main journals are ground to a matching undersize with the correct fillet radius, so standard undersize bearings fit right.

Polish & Clean

Journals are polished for proper bearing contact and oil film.

Balance (Optional)

Add crank only or full rotating assembly balancing for a smoother, longer lasting engine.

FAQ

Crankshaft Grinding Questions

How much does crankshaft grinding cost?

Most automotive crankshaft regrinds cost $180 to $260 depending on the engine. Single cylinder small engine cranks start at $130. Magnaflux and welding are extra. Jobbers and engine rebuilders should call for special pricing.

How long does it take to grind a crankshaft?

Typical turnaround is 1 to 3 days once your crankshaft is in our shop. Welding, balancing and custom work can take longer.

How many times can a crankshaft be reground?

It depends on the crank and the available bearing undersizes. Many cranks can be reground more than once. When a crank reaches its last usable undersize, the journals can often be welded and ground back to size.

Do I need new bearings after grinding my crankshaft?

Yes. After grinding, undersize bearings that match the new journal size are installed. Ask us for the finished undersize so you or your builder order the correct bearings.
