Magnaflux Crack Testing & Crankshaft Polishing
Find cracks before they find you. Crankshaft Craftsmen Magnaflux tests crankshafts for hidden cracks and polishes journals to a smooth bearing surface, from average automotive cranks to large diesel crankshafts.
Magnaflux Crack Testing
Magnaflux, or magnetic particle inspection, magnetizes the crankshaft and applies fine iron particles that collect at surface and near-surface cracks that you cannot see with the naked eye. It is the standard way to check a steel or iron crank before you spend money grinding, welding or balancing it.
We recommend crack testing after a spun bearing, overheating, detonation, a broken rod, or any time you are building a high horsepower or diesel engine. A cracked crankshaft should not go back in an engine.
Crankshaft Polishing
Polishing removes light wear and leaves a smooth journal finish for proper bearing contact and oil film. A crank that measures within spec but shows light scuffing may only need polishing instead of a full regrind. Every crank we grind is finished for proper bearing surfaces.
Magnaflux and Polishing Prices
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| Magnaflux, average crankshaft | $80 |
| Magnaflux, medium diesel | $110 |
| Magnaflux, large diesel | $140 |
| Polishing, average crankshaft | $60 |
| Polishing, medium diesel | $95 |
| Polishing, large diesel | $140 |
Magnaflux is not included in regrind pricing. See the full price list, or learn about diesel crankshaft service.
Magnaflux and Polishing Questions
What is Magnaflux crack testing on a crankshaft?
Magnaflux is magnetic particle inspection. The crankshaft is magnetized and coated with fine iron particles that gather at cracks, making hidden surface and near-surface cracks visible so a bad crank is caught before it goes back in an engine.
How much does it cost to Magnaflux a crankshaft?
Magnaflux testing is $80 for an average crankshaft, $110 for a medium diesel and $140 for a large diesel crankshaft.
Can a crankshaft just be polished instead of ground?
Yes, if the journals measure within spec and only show light wear or scuffing. Polishing is $60 for an average crankshaft. If journals are out of round, tapered or scored, they need to be reground.
Should I crack test my crankshaft before grinding?
It is a good idea, especially after a spun bearing, broken rod or overheating, and on diesel and high performance builds. It is far cheaper to find a crack before machining and assembly.
