Crankshaft Welding and Repair
Worn past a standard undersize? Damaged thrust, snout or keyway? Crankshaft Craftsmen welds and rebuilds crankshaft surfaces, then regrinds them to size, so you can save the original crank instead of buying new.
When a Regrind Is Not Enough
Most crankshafts can be reground to a standard undersize. When journals are scored too deep, a thrust surface is chewed up, or the snout and keyway are damaged, welding is often the way to bring the crank back. We build up the damaged area with weld, then machine it back to the correct size and finish.
Saving the original crankshaft matters for numbers-matching restorations, hard to find cranks and engines where a new crank is expensive or no longer made.
Crankshaft Welding Services
| Repair | Price |
|---|---|
| Journal weld | $100 |
| Thrust weld | $115 |
| Snout / keyway repair | $115 |
| Seal surface repair | $115 |
| Golf cart crank, per journal weld | $50 to $65 |
| Custom work (stroker, deep grinding over .050 in.) | $150 / hour |
Welding is priced in addition to the regrind. See regrind prices by engine.
Common Crankshaft Problems We Repair
- Spun bearings and deeply scored rod or main journals
- Worn or damaged thrust surfaces
- Damaged snouts and sheared or wallowed keyways
- Worn rear main seal surfaces
- Journals already ground to the last available undersize
Crack Test Before You Weld
A cracked crankshaft should not go back in an engine. We recommend Magnaflux crack testing before any welding or grinding, especially after a spun bearing or engine failure.
Crankshaft Welding Questions
Can a crankshaft with a spun bearing be repaired?
Often, yes. If the journal is not cracked and the damage is within limits, it can be reground to an undersize. If it is too deep, the journal can be welded and reground to size. Magnaflux crack testing comes first.
How much does crankshaft welding cost?
A journal weld is $100. Thrust, snout and keyway, and seal surface repairs are $115 each. Welding is in addition to the regrind price. Golf cart cranks are $50 to $65 per journal weld.
Is welding a crankshaft as strong as a new crank?
A properly welded and ground crank is a proven repair for many engines. For high horsepower or racing builds, call us to talk through whether welding or a replacement crank makes more sense.
Can you repair a crankshaft that is already at the last undersize?
Yes, in many cases. The journal can be welded back up and ground to standard or a usable undersize. Call 248-313-9685 with the details.
