Frequently Asked Questions
What is crankshaft grinding?
Crankshaft grinding (regrinding) removes a small, precise amount of material from worn rod and main journals so they are round, straight and smooth again. The journals are ground to a standard undersize and matching undersize bearings are installed. See crankshaft grinding.
Where can I get my crankshaft ground?
Crankshaft Craftsmen grinds crankshafts at 22635 Heslip Dr., Novi, MI 48375, serving Metro Detroit and Southeast Michigan. Customers anywhere in the USA can ship their crankshaft to us.
How much does crankshaft grinding cost?
Most automotive regrinds cost $180 to $260. A domestic 4 cylinder is $180, Chevy small block and LS cranks are $220, big blocks are $230 and Ford 6.0, 6.4 and 6.7 diesel cranks are $250. Small engine single cylinder cranks are $130. See the full price list.
How long does crankshaft grinding take?
Typical turnaround is 1 to 3 days once your crankshaft is in our shop, depending on the work needed. Welding, balancing and custom work can take longer.
Can I ship my crankshaft to you?
Yes. We accept shipped-in crankshafts from anywhere in the United States. Call 248-313-9685 before shipping, pack it securely, and include your name, phone, return address and the work you need.
Are Magnaflux and welding included in the regrind price?
No. Magnaflux is $80 for an average crankshaft ($110 to $140 for diesels), and welding is $100 to $115 per repair, in addition to the regrind.
Can a crankshaft with a spun bearing be saved?
Often, yes. After Magnaflux crack testing, the journal can be reground to an undersize, or welded and ground back to size if the damage is too deep. See welding and repair.
Should I balance my crankshaft?
Balancing is recommended any time you change pistons or rods or build for performance. Crank only balancing is $220, full rotating assembly is $420 and zero balancing is $450. See balancing.
Do you offer exchange crankshafts?
Yes, at no extra charge when you turn in a core that can be reground without welding. Cores with cracks, stripped threads, broken bolts, sheared keyways or that need excessive welding are not accepted. Replacement cores are available, call for pricing.
Do you grind import crankshafts?
Yes. We grind imports including Honda, Toyota, Hyundai and Kia: 4 cylinder cranks are $190, V6 cranks are $210 and inline 6 cranks are $220. We also grind BMW and Subaru crankshafts.
Do you work on diesel, tractor and golf cart crankshafts?
Yes. We grind Ford 6.0, 6.4 and 6.7 diesel cranks ($250), Ford 4 cylinder tractor cranks ($190) and eccentric, twin and Yamaha G2 and G9 golf cart cranks ($70 full grind).
Do engine rebuilders get special pricing?
